“I’m thinking about retiring but I’m not sure what I would do.” Looking at my friend in bewilderment, my first thought was, Are you kidding? My list is so long I don’t think I’ll ever get to everything. I had recently retired so I was thinking of the all the things I was currently involved with and those I would like to be.

Retirement. The word brings up many connotations – fishing, rocking chairs, cruises, sleeping late, all sorts of things. I guess we all look forward to that time when we don’t have to be somewhere at a certain time or be accountable to others. Leisure is probably the overall word that comes to mind. I was fortunate that I was able to teach part time so I did have some days to myself. I definitely took advantage of those days. I got more connected with Stonecroft Ministries, I played tennis, and skied. Since I didn’t teach during the summer, it was an easy transition into retirement as it felt like my summer was just extended!

I don’t think God intends for us to “retire.” I figure as long as He gives us breath, He has something for us to do. Hopefully, our working days were enjoyable and gave us opportunities to learn many life lessons – I know mine were and the lessons I learned I reflect back on and remember vividly! Coming into this season of my life is exciting. What new things does God have for me? What lessons am I going to learn?

I don’t see retirement as sitting back and taking a long sigh to relax for the next years. No, I see it as opportunities to serve God in new ways, have new adventures, explore talents God has given me, and look for ways to enjoy the life God has allowed me live! What will you do with this season of life called retirement?
